Speed Limits & Following Distance

A posted speed limit sign shows 35 mph, but heavy rain has flooded part of the road. What should you do?

  • A.Drive slower than 35 mph, at a speed safe for the flooded conditions
  • B.Stay at exactly 35 mph because it is posted
  • C.Speed up to splash through quickly
  • D.Stop in the travel lane and wait for rain to end
Correct answer

A. Drive slower than 35 mph, at a speed safe for the flooded conditions

Why

A posted limit does not make that speed safe in bad weather. Slow down for flooding and reduced traction, as the Basic Speed Law requires.
