Controls & Basic Operation

At speeds above parking-lot speeds, how do you initiate a lean to turn?

  • A.Turn the handlebars sharply in the opposite direction and hold them there
  • B.Stop using the handlebars and lean only with your knees
  • C.Press forward on the handgrip on the side toward which you want to turn
  • D.Close your eyes and shift your weight to the rear
Correct answer

C. Press forward on the handgrip on the side toward which you want to turn

Why

This is countersteering: above slow speeds, pressing on the right grip leans the motorcycle right and pressing on the left grip leans it left. It becomes natural with practice and is how direction changes are made at road speed.
